the lark ascending

The nation’s favourite Desert Island Disc – ‘The Lark Ascending’ by Vaughan Williams¬† – gets the BBC4 documentary treatment tonight.

For some, the music may have long ceased to cast its magical spell, thanks to overexposure on Classic FM and its use as background music when summoning up – ‘England.’

But I encourage you to give it a go because the programme features a new performance of the original piece, scored for violin and piano.

The pianist involved, Charles Matthews, was my teacher when in mid-life I decided it wasn’t too late to learn to play.

He’s a brilliant pianist and accompanist – and has the patience of a saint.
