baker street

A new series of ‘Soul Music’ begins on BBC Radio 4 today – the show that explores pieces of music, which have a powerful emotional impact.

It’s hard to believe it’s in its 13th run.

But with the world of emotional music to go at, it’s a format that shows no sign of running out of steam anytime soon.

‘Baker Street’ by Gerry Rafferty is undoubtedly a great song, but perhaps one that has unfairly become associated with  the worst sort of bland commercial radio.

Overfamiliarity breeds contempt.

Each time I hear it though, the lyric speaks powerfully, and the saxophone riff and amazing guitar solo each play their part in the song’s appeal.

Rafferty, who died in 2011, was also involved in writing another of my favourite pop songs – ‘Stuck In The Middle With You’ by Stealers Wheel, produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.

And if you don’t know his work with Billy Connolly in The Humblebums, that too is worth checking out.

Talented guy.

And if you’re interested in Gerry Rafferty, a documentary first broadcast on BBC Scotland last August as a tribute to the man and his music is due an imminent repeat on BBC4.
