The death of the soprano Elizabeth Connell, aged 65, is a blow to all music lovers.

In 2000 as part of the Sydney Olympics Arts Festival, she was one of the soloists in a performance of Mahler 8 I took part in with the CBSO Chorus.

It was billed as a real ‘Symphony of a Thousand,’ featuring 1000 performers under Edo de Waart – split between around 850 singers drawn from all over Australia (and us), and 150 orchestral players.

My memory of Elizabeth Connell is the pureness of her tone in a huge venue – the then Sydney Superdome – later used during that Olympics for basketball.

Her voice floated around the giant acoustic, creating magic in the process.

I’m not the biggest fan of opera, which was her real metier, so I’m just glad I had the chance to see and hear her on that memorable occasion.
