Handel’s ‘Messiah’ is recognised as one of THE great choral works.

Hearing the latest edition of the excellent  ‘Soul Music’ on BBC Radio 4 reminded me that in 2007, I was lucky to be in the audience for a performance of the piece that was truly memorable.

To mark the reopening of the newly refurbished Birmingham Town Hall, a choir was put together from the city’s gospel communities to perform ‘Messiah: A Soulful Celebration.’

It’s a gospel and soul reworking of Handel’s masterpiece put together in the early 1990s – once heard, never forgotten.

Sometimes in the middle of the week, you need a boost to help you towards the weekend.

So on this Leap Day, perhaps this performance of the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ will be just the job.
