Piano trios are one of the most challenging formats in which to play.

That’s because there’s nowhere for the participants to hide.

The trios led by the Japanese pianist Masabumi Kikuchi (born 1939) are always of the highest quality as demonstrated on the new album ‘Sunrise’ (ECM Records).

Joined by Thomas Morgan on double-bass and the legendary drummer Paul Motian, who died last November, it’s a record (made in 2009) that is perhaps best suited to late-night listening.

So if you visit this blog in daylight hours, it might be worth a return visit once the day’s work is done – and you’ve got a drink to hand.
