The people behind the scenes are often the ones with the most interesting stories to tell.

That certainly applies to Barbara Moore – composer, arranger and backing vocalist, who was a guest on yesterday’s ‘Midweek’ on BBC Radio 4.

Her work is known to anyone who’s made a documentary and needed some ‘mood’ music, specialising as she did in writing for the De Wolfe library.

She was also a member of the Ladybirds, who if I remember rightly were the backing vocal group of choice in the 60s and 70s.

They were certainly name-checked at the end of the tv light entertainment shows we used to watch as a family on Saturday evenings.

As revealed in her ‘Midweek’ interview, one of the musical contributions she made was arranging the gospel voices on Elton John’s ‘Border Song.’

She also arranged ‘At The Sign Of The Swinging Cymbal’ for Alan Freeman’s long-running radio show ‘Pick of the Pops.’

Great music, great arrangements.
