jazz ambassador

Jazz has taken a back seat in recent weeks on this Blog.

But I wanted to finally take this opportunity to pay my respects to the saxophonist Andy Hamilton, who died a couple of weeks ago at the age of 94.

Anyone who’s spent anytime involved in music-making in the Midlands knows about Andy.

His story is remarkable, not just his own musical life as performer and composer, but also his life-long commitment to supporting young jazz musicians.

It earned him an MBE from the Queen towards the end of his life.

I’ve pulled together a few links from around the web that illustrate Andy’s story and his playing, and how he helped nurture young talent wherever he found it.

Fellow Birmingham saxophonist Soweto Kinch is a prime example of the fruits of Andy’s life and work.
