‘It was 20 years ago…’ goes a certain Beatles song.

But the piece of pop music history that I want to highlight happened 25 years ago today.

Courtesy of the BBC regional news programme ‘North West Tonight,’ Rick Astley took his first steps on the road to pop stardom on 17th July 1987.

I wrote a 750-word post about Rick’s tv debut back in March when news emerged about the ‘Hit Factory Live’ concert.

‘Rick’s TV Debut’ – 23rd March 2012

As we now know, the great British weather put the mockers on Pete Waterman’s big night in London’s Hyde Park last week and all those PWL acts, including Rick, were left without a gig.

But being a journalist schooled in the art of celebrating an anniversary, I couldn’t let today pass unmarked – at least if only by me.

Looking at the original script cue, which I unearthed from a box in the loft, I see that  the item lasted 4′ 47″ and was called ‘Budding Pop Star.’

If you remember the original report and Rick’s first tv appearance being broadcast, then do please leave a ‘comment.’

My 23rd March 2012 blog post has links to the record company video for ‘Never Gonna Give You Up.’

Plus Rick’s website where you’ll find details of various gigs he’s playing in the next few weeks as well as a tour to Australia in November.

Nice to find out that you’ve had good taste in music for 25 years. There’s gonna be a huge Australian tour and it would be nice to read your review about it.

  2. Yes, I’m one of those who remembers the original broadcast. Of course we saw your blog in March đŸ™‚ Thank you for mentioning the website, and for sharing the #RickLove.
