vintage rick astley

Thanks to last night’s documentary about Stock Aitken and Waterman, tv footage I’ve blogged about in recent months featuring Rick Astley was on show for all to enjoy.

As well as clips from Rick’s first tv appearance and his debut on ‘Top Of the Pops,’ there’s material from a shoot we did at a club in Warrington called Mr.Smiths.

It was there during a personal appearance in late August 1987 that Rick and Pete Waterman celebrated ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ achieving silver (or was it gold) disc status.

I well remember Pete spraying the assembled crowd with champagne – Formula 1 style.

And afterwards we adjourned to a local restaurant where the memory of Dublin Bay prawns that I enjoyed still make my mouth water.

It was good to see Pete and his record company rightly being honoured with an hour of prime time tv.

And on a night in the Olympic Stadium where the excitement levels weren’t at fever pitch, it will have no doubt attracted a decent audience.

I for one enjoyed it.

If you missed the programme, here it is via the ITV Player.

For Rick Astley fans, the Rick sequence begins about 19 minutes 30 seconds in.
