The Premier League football season has just got underway in the UK.

But we’re well into into the second half of the BBC Proms, undoubtedly the premier league of classical music featuring the world’s great orchestras, soloists and conductors.

Last night saw Prom 51 (out of 76) featuring Andris Nelsons and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

Now available on the BBC iPlayer, the concert featured Glinka’s ‘Ruslan and Lyudmila,’ a UK premiere of Emily Howard’s ‘Calculus of the Nervous System’ and Shostakovich’s 7th Symphony, ‘Leningrad.’

Over the next few weeks, if you live in the UK or Europe, there are opportunities to hear Andris and the CBSO thanks to various music festivals.

Tomorrow night, the CBSO 2012/13 season opens with Brahms ‘Nanie’  and Beethoven 9 – a concert I shall be taking part in with the CBSO Chorus.

Then after an appearance at the Edinburgh Festival, the orchestra and chorus (sadly without me due to work commitments) go on tour to Europe, climaxing in a residency at the Lucerne Festival.

It promises to be an exciting few weeks for Maestro Nelsons and the CBSO family.
