The Mercury Prize nomination list for Album of the Year in the UK includes Sam Lee’s ‘Ground Of Its Own.’

Regular readers (‘Sam Lee,’ 21st March 2012) will know it was mixed by my good friend John Wood of Nick Drake, John Martyn, Sandy Denny, Squeeze, and others to numerous to mention, fame.

So it was a pleasure to be the first person to break the news to him.

I called him on what was the final day’s work on a new album he’s engineering with the multi-talented Clive Gregson producing.

Union Jill are Sharon Winfield and Helen Turner – a folk duo from West Yorkshire – and this their third album is due for release in 2013.

John was very complimentary about the Union Jill material he’s been working on.

So I would say that’s a pretty good endorsement.

They’re gigging in the months upto Christmas around the UK.

For now, check out their website and these YouTube videos – and remember where you heard about Union Jill.
