war requiem dvd

Amidst all the dvd/Blu-ray releases cascading on to the market in the run up to Christmas, there’s one that I can vouch for personally.

The 50th anniversary performance of Benjamin Britten’s ‘War Requiem’ in Coventry Cathedral last May was broadcast ‘live’ to 17 European countries.

And now Unitel Classica and Arthaus Musik have joined forces to bring the full power of that evening to a global audience via a new dvd/Blu-ray release.

It is quite stunning, both in terms of the quality of the presentation and the way in which it captures the connection between the music, the performers and the audience on that evening.

Far from being just a souvenir for those involved, it seems to stand on its own merits as a piece of music-making that did a remarkable work justice.

The trailer will give you a flavour of what I mean, and if you revisit my blog about the evening, you’ll be able to see the whole performance on the BBC/Arts Council website ‘The Space’ via a link that still seems to be working.
