Danny Thompson has played upright bass on some of my favourite records.

So a collection of performances featuring Danny alongside names like Richard Thompson (no relation), Barbara Dickson, Eric Bibb, John Martyn and Bert Jansch is one to be savoured.

‘Connected’ (Big Cartel) features 12 tracks and if you go searching on YouTube, you’ll find him talking about each tune and how it came about.

In 1998, Danny narrated my original Nick Drake BBC radio documentary – ‘Fruit Tree’  – and in the years since, our paths have crossed a few times.

Invariably, in unusual places.

One occasion was a parliamentary reception for the great American folk singer Tom Paxton, who did a spell-binding version of ‘The Last Thing On My Mind’ in a crowded room at the Palace of Westminster.

Another was a charity evening hosted by Yusuf Islam (aka Cat Stevens) for an educational project.

I was also there the night Danny got his lifetime achievement award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2007.

Star man.
