sunshine on leith

The Scottish duo The Proclaimers are particularly well known for a couple of tunes – ‘Letter From America’ and ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).’

But it was their song ‘Sunshine On Leith,’ the title track of their second album (Chrysalis) released in 1988 that was the subject of the latest BBC Radio 4 series ‘Lyrical Journey.’

The premise of the show is simple enough – looking at the connections between a song and the place it celebrates.

Leith is on the Firth of Forth in Scotland, and the programme did a fine job in capturing the sense of place and its role in inspiring the song that bear its name.

You know when one of your songs has entered the zeitgeist when it’s taken up by sports fans as an anthem – in this case the supporters of Hibernian FC.

So if you don’t have time to listen to the whole programme, just have a look at the rendition of the song by 30,000 Hibs fans en masse after their 5-1 win in the 2007 Scottish league cup final.
