this is uncool

Occasionally the long-running radio programme ‘Desert Island Discs’ throws up a surprising musical nugget or two.

But invariably it’s the book choice that arouses my interest.

Columnist Julie Burchill, who cut her teeth on the ‘New Musical Express’ during Punk’s heyday and whose musical choices were Punk-free, chose a corker.

Garry Mulholland’s ‘This Is Uncool: The 500 Greatest Singles Since Punk and Disco’ (Cassell Illustrated) starts with the Sex Pistols ‘Anarchy in the UK’ and takes off from there.

It’s not a book I know, so armed with Burchill’s recommendation and Twitter endorsements, I hit various used book websites, only to discover that it changes hands for lots of money – and then some.

So here’s hoping that Ms.Burchill’s mention will encourage the publishers to re-issue it in a budget-priced edition.
