At a loose end with an hour to fill, I was delighted to chance upon a 2010 music documentary about Steve Winwood.

Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith, solo artist and session performer – his nigh on 50 years in the music business can give any of the greats a run for their money.

The programme has a delightful atmosphere with Winwood interviewed and featured in the rolling pastures of Gloucestershire where he’s lived and farmed for many years.

There’s a particularly evocative sequence where, for the first time since the early 70s, he visits the house where Traffic famously got it together in the country to create a string of influential and successful albums.

Winwood has actually had several musical careers, marked by commercial highs and lows.

But though it’s perhaps unfashionable to say this, I rather like his 80s MTV friendly hits.

As the documentary makes clear, he wasn’t totally comfortable with either the video age or the 80s production of those tunes.

But, boy, are they catchy songs – and he belts them out for all he’s worth with authentic soul.

If you hurry, you’ll catch the documentary before it disappears off the BBC iPlayer.

And Winwood is touring the UK and Europe this summer followed by United States and Canada in the Fall – the dates are on his website.
