If you had to choose 50 records to tell the story of modern Britain, which 50 would you choose?

Fortunately you don’t have to as Stuart Maconie is doing just that in his BBC Radio 2 series ‘The People’s Songs.’

The latest episode in a year-long project that continues throughout 2013 was about David Bowie’s ‘Starman.’

Sub-titled ‘Androgyny Arrives in the Living Room,’ you might be getting a feeling of deja vu.

Was it only last Summer when Jarvis Cocker decribed ‘Starman’ in similar terms as part of his ‘David Bowie and the Story of Ziggy Stardust’ documentary?

Indeed it is, dear reader.

But then it is one of the game-changing moments in pop music, and deserves its place in the sun.

My post from June 2012 about watching ‘Starman’ as an impressionable 14 year-old also has a link to the ‘Top of the Pops’ appearance that caused such a stir.

And the eye-catching outfit Bowie’s wearing will be on show at the V & A as part of ‘David Bowie Is…’ exhibition later in the month.
