Funny how a piece of music can you time travel you around the place when you least expect it.

The great sports broadcaster David Coleman, who died just before Christmas, was part of my tv world for more years than I care to remember.

One of the programmes he fronted featured in a BBC1 tribute, broadcast last week, but which I’ve only just caught up with.

‘Sportsnight with Coleman’ brought sports action and interviews into living rooms across the country on a Tuesday evening at a time when such moments weren’t as ubiquitous as they are now.

I hadn’t heard the theme tune for decades, but there it was in its insistent glory, booming out and reminding me of nights in front of the old gogglebox with my sports-loving dad.

Nice memory for the blog, I thought, and then as I’m locating it on YouTube, I’m reminded that it was composed by Tony Hatch.

For those who have never heard of him, Hatch is one of the great pop song composers of yesteryear.

I heard him a few weeks back on the wireless, promoting a forthcoming tour where he will take to the stage and his songs will be performed with full orchestra.

So here’s a surprising ‘two-for-one’ deal, which display his talents in their wide-ranging glory.
