freddie mercury rip

It was 20 years ago today.

My only ‘live’ Queen experience was on their 1982 Hot Space tour at Elland Road football stadium in Leeds, UK.

I can’t say it was one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen because it wasn’t. My chief memory is seeing support act The Teardrop Explodes (with frontman Julian Cope in his pop star pomp) being bottled.  The episode is recounted in Cope’s excellent book ‘Head On.’

Apart from the hits, you went to a Queen concert to see Freddie in action.

So today seems like a good day to celebrate his unrivalled ability to work a crowd.
